DoxyPEP, an alternative way to prevent STI (syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia)
Among STDs, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia in particular are known as highly contagious sexually transmitted diseases, and the single infection rate is reported to range from approximately 30% to as high as 70%.
It is estimated that only about 30% (1 in 3) of those infected do not show any symptoms, and many are asymptomatic. However, even if they are asymptomatic, they are still contagious and can pass on their infection one after another to those with whom they have sexual relations.
Recent research has shown that syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia can be prevented by taking medication and vaccines.
We can prescribe an oral drug for prevention, as well as give vaccines on the same day at our clinic. (online is also available for oral medication)
1.What is Doxy-PEP?
4.How about drug-resistance to Doxy-PEP?
Since DoxyPEP uses antibiotics (doxycycline), many people are concerned about the development of resistant bacteria.
The development of resistant bacteria is triggered by “taking DoxyPEP while already infected with gonorrhea, chlamydia, or syphilis.
The development of resistant bacteria can lead to the development of bacteria that are difficult to cure with conventional drugs, and if these bacteria become prevalent, it will be to the detriment of society.
In order to prevent the development of resistant bacteria, all patients who start DoxyPEP are tested for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis at a special price.
If you have test results from other hospitals (generally gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis results within two weeks), you may present them at the time of prescription.
In addition, since DoxyPEP does not prevent 100% of infections, we recommend regular testing once a month for those taking the drug internally.
We are happy to offer testing for STDs at a price that is easy to continue for those who undergo regular STD testing.
5.What we do at our clinic
Since October 2022, in cooperation with the AIDS Treatment Research and Development Center (ACC), we have been prescribing DoxyPEP to patients at high risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. In doing so, we take measures against resistant bacteria by asking them to be tested for STDs on a regular basis.
We are also accumulating information to verify the effectiveness of DoxyPEP in Japan and to build a new form of preventive medicine, an effort that can be given back to our society.

Taking Doxycycline (Vibramycin) after sexual encounter, is a new method of preventing sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. Its by taking two tablets of doxycycline within 72 hours after sexual intercourse.
The increase in sexually transmitted diseases is a growing problem in the world and Doxy-PEP is attracting attention as a new way of preventing STIs.
Doxy-pep is recommended for the following people:
Those who have had syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, or other sexually transmitted infections before.
People who have multiple sex partners.
Commercial sex-workers
Those who want to prevent STDs properly.
2.How effective is Doxy-PEP?
A study on doxypep was featured at the International AIDS Conference in July 2022 and its effectiveness in preventing syphilis was reported to be 87%, chlamydia 88%, and gonorrhea 55%.

There is growing hope among experts that reducing the incidence of infections through prevention will reduce the use of antibiotics through treatment.

3.What to watchout while taking Doxy-PEP?
Doxycycline is a common antibiotic used outside of the treatment of sexually transmitted infections, such as in the treatment of acne.
As with other antibacterial agents, side effects such as diarrhea and nausea may occur.
Diarrhea symptoms may appear when the drug is first taken, but will lessen with continued use.
Nausea can be avoided by taking it after meals.
In addition, people who cannot take doxycycline internally are as follows.
- People who are pregnant or lactating
- People with sunlight sensitivity
- People who are allergic to tetracyclines.
There are several other precautions, so it is important to always take Doxycycline under medical supervision.
