Doxy-PEP in Tokyo : Preventive Medication for STIs – Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia

公開日|2025.07.22 更新日|2025.08.09

Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia Are Common and Easily Spread STIs

Did you know that some of the most common STIs—syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia—can be passed on very easily through sexual contact? In fact, studies show that the chance of getting infected from just one encounter can be as high as 30–70%.

What’s more, only about 1 in 3 people who get these infections notice any symptoms. That means most people may not even know they’re infected—and can unknowingly pass it on to others.

The good news is that we offer ways to protect yourself. Recent research shows that certain oral medications and vaccines can help prevent these STIs.

One promising option is called Doxy-PEP, a medication taken soon after sex to lower your risk of infection.

At our clinic, you can receive a consultation and get same-day prescriptions or vaccinations if appropriate. Your health and peace of mind matter. Don’t hesitate to reach out and take charge of your sexual health.

Our clinics are located in Yokohama and Ueno, and we offer the same services and pricing at both sites.

What is Doxy-PEP?

Doxy-PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) involves taking two tablets of doxycycline (Vibramycin), an antibiotic, once within 72 hours after sexual activity to prevent infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.

As STIs continue to rise globally, Doxy-PEP is gaining attention as a new form of prevention.

Doxy-PEP is recommended for:

  • Individuals with a history of syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, or other STIs
  • Those with multiple sexual partners
  • CSWs (commercial sex workers, adult film actors, etc.)
  • Anyone seeking reliable STI prevention
  •

How Effective is Doxy-PEP?

At the International AIDS Conference in July 2022, Doxy-PEP research results were presented:

  • Syphilis prevention: 87% effective
  • Chlamydia prevention: 88% effective
  • Gonorrhea prevention: 55% effective

Experts hope that preventing infections in advance will help reduce overall antibiotic usage in treatment.

Precautions When Taking Doxy-PEP

Doxycycline is a widely used antibiotic also prescribed for conditions such as acne.
Like other antibiotics, it may cause side effects such as diarrhea or nausea.

  • Diarrhea may appear early in treatment but usually subsides.
  • Nausea can be reduced by taking the medication after a meal.

Doxycycline is NOT suitable for:

  • Individuals who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding
  • Those with photosensitivity (sun sensitivity)
  • People allergic to tetracycline antibiotics

Always consult a physician before starting Doxy-PEP.

Is There a Risk of Antibiotic Resistance?

Since Doxy-PEP involves using antibiotics, concerns about drug-resistant bacteria are valid.
The risk increases if someone unknowingly takes Doxy-PEP while already infected with syphilis, gonorrhea, or chlamydia.

Drug-resistant strains may be harder to treat and pose serious public health challenges.

To minimize this risk:

  • We offer discounted STI testing (syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia) before prescribing Doxy-PEP
  • Accept recent test results (within the past 2 weeks) from other clinics
  • Recommend monthly STI testing for those using Doxy-PEP regularly

We offer affordable, continued testing options to support regular health monitoring.
